 Thatched Roof texture

This was my first real procedural material I made using Substance Designer for use in a collaboration project, Blood of the Damned, which you can read more about here

Programs Used: Substance Designer

Creating the
Material

To start out, I created two separate shape nodes: a disk and a square. In the Instance parameters of each shape, I adjusted the X Size to be 0.07 and kept the Y Size at 1 in order to make them long and thin. I then skewed and tapered each shape at the bottom ends and used the blur and a gradient nodes to soften up my edges and add depth.

From there, I connected the shapes as pattern inputs in a Tile Sampler node in order to combine and distribute them in a manner similar to a bundle of straw.

I then blended in another gradient to get the ends whiter than the tops and plugged that into another Tiler Sampler node in order to achieve a layered effect.

For the color variation I just applied a simple color gradient.

And here's the finished look!
